| More pubs are closing across the Midlands than in any other part of the country - new figures have revealed. They were shutting at the rate of eight a week over the last six months of 2008,according to the British Beer & Pub Association.
Landlords face bigger bills at the same time hard-up punters are turning to cheaper supermarket booze. Enthusiasts at the Campaign for Real Ale have warned that up to 100 pubs a month could close this year
‘The Pub trade is down and the big breweries know the value of the properties. Many of them have decided that it is more profitable to sell them off to property developers for housing than run them as a pub,’ said Gavin Sherman of the Paramount investment property team.
'We advise national brewers and pub companies on property acquisitions, disposals, estate management work and associated commercial issues. The market is very active in the sale of trading or closed pubs for re-development conditional upon planning and licensing.' he continued.
