| Until the late 19th century, the area around West Hampstead was a small village called West End. Modern West Hampstead emerged with the arrival of the railways, and the transformation of the area from farm land to housing estates. In 1879, the Metropolitan Railway adopted the name West Hampstead for their station on West End Lane, the main road through the area. West End Lane is the lively heart of West Hampstead an area of North West London situated between Childs Hill to the north, Frognal and Hampstead to the north-east, Swiss Cottage to the east, and Kilburn to the south. The close proximity of West Hampstead to Hampstead also adds to charm and desirability of the area. Along West End Lane there are a host of cafes, bakeries and boutiques popular with local residents. At night the area attracts a young vibrant cosmopolitan crowd who enjoy the popular bars. This lively night life contrasts to the village atmosphere during the day. There are also a number of popular schools in the area appealing to the many families who live in the area. West Hampstead is one of the best served by public transport in London making it a sought area to live by many professionals who work in the city. The area has its own tube station on the Jubilee line and the Metropolitan line is easily accessible on the Finchley Road. Additionally the Thameslink offers direct train connections into the city including City Thameslink easily accessible by the areas of Bank, St Pauls and Farringdon. The area is serviced by London Overground with routes spanning from Richmond in West London across to the Olympic regeneration area of Stratford in the East traversing through Highbury and Islington for the Victoria Line tube line; and Hampstead for the Northern Line.
