Live Music and Teenage Pubs Could Save the Local Pub; UK's Community Pubs Support From MPs

Licensing laws that have damaged the culture of live music in pubs need to be relaxed, an MP led inquiry has announced. Alistair Darling's budget in April this year managed to ignore all pleas for relief from beer tax increase from Publicans, the Axe the Tax campaign and a cross party group of MP's. Landlords and breweries are already crushed from the effects of the smoking ban, cheap supermarket alcohol and the credit crunch in general. Pubs are finding it difficult to keep their regulars returning, let alone attract new customers.

Help may be at hand from the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, who have made recommendations for the relaxation of the rules for live music in pubs. Many publicans believed that the rules have been enforced with a heavy hand by police and local authorities for reasons of maintenance of public order and prevention of terrorism. The 2003 restrictions are widely considered to be bureaucratic, costly for Publicans, and also a threat to the UK music industry. Fergal Sharkey the Chief Executive of UK Music strongly backed the relaxation of measures; "The UK has a world-class music industry, but it is underpinned by extremely delicate foundations via an intricate network of back rooms in pubs, bars, clubs, hotels and halls," he said. "For continued future success, it is vital that tomorrow's superstars and young musicians have somewhere to ply their craft, somewhere to play and that communities have a place to gather together." An argument often used by the Pub Industry.

Further good news for the communities whose local pub has closed is the The Home office new scheme to re open empty pubs as teenage bars. The idea is the product of partnership working by youth, community, health, substance misuse, careers, criminal justice and other agencies. Communities will also benefit from the reopening of unviable boarded up pubs and for investors permission for change of use is a formality. The scheme is being piloted in Crewe and on Merseyside, and run by Partnership projects and if successful, could be nationwide. With the support of some major pub companies, parents, teenagers and the Government the teenage pub could be the answer to slowing the rate of permanent closure of UK pubs.
